When coming back from VOIG's office the other day I talked briefly about old games with Hairymop, games such as Doom. It inspired me to get my good old floppies and install this piece of history back on my computer. This was such a smart move for ID Software to release the sources of the game as OpenSource. Nowadays we can find dozens of projects porting the game on the most exotic platforms.
Amongst the most popular "remakes" I chose PrBoom and Doom Legacy. Both are quite easy to run, you copy the .WAD files and that's pretty much it. I got frustrated with PrBoom because you can't really configure the mouse that much so after a few levels of "only keyboard" gaming I switched to Doom Legacy. I remember using this one on my Linux box a long time ago. The development seems to be stalled, the last version is a few years old. I suppose there isn't much you can do without totally changing the game. So I played Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 for hours this weekend. Doom Legacy gives a new face to the game, higher resolution, OpenGL, better lighting, better controls, better multiplayer (even online!).
You can find a few screenshots in my screenshot page. You will even see a screenshot of Doom Alpha v0.2, in my Doom madness I found a (very) early version of the game, after only 2 months of development. This is pretty much Wolfenstein 3D with different "textures", an exciting discovery for any Doom fan.
